In November of 2013, it came to our attention that a very sweet little Cairn needed a home. Her name is Cloak, and her story is a sad one. She was in a breeding facility until she was nine. She is now twelve. I don’t think you need me to tell you what these facilities are like. At Intake, after rescue, she was frightened by so many things, including people.

 

 

Luckily Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network rescued her and delivered her to a wonderful foster home. Cloak came to feel pretty secure in her little fortress that was a dog bed in a safe place. Little by little she learned to do things like play with her foster sibling dogs.  Great progress was acknowledged when she let her foster mom lift her into bed with her. Cloak learned to feel comfortable in close proximity, and one time nuzzled her. Foster mom reports that Cloak is now enjoying sleeping right next to her pillow.  She now hops up there happily for bedtime and for naps. She is quite relaxed there  and lets foster mom rub her all over. Sometimes she acts likes she enjoys it!

 

This sweet pup has made other progress as well, and now will go outside when foster mom props the door open for her.  Not only is she spending time out in the yard, but she is calmer there.  She will come up to foster mom if she is sitting on the porch steps, to get pets and scratches. She is also completely potty trained. She knows the commands “let’s go potty”, “let’s go outside,” and “let’s go to bed.”

 

Cloak is also pretty good at jumping right  in the car to go to the groomer or visiting. She stays on the passenger side floor under the dash while driving, and climbs out and up on foster mom’s lap when she stops the car.

 

Cloak is happiest and most relaxed when  there are several days with nothing unusual happening, such as company visiting, doorbells ringing, phones ringing, or foster mom going anywhere.  Repetitive routines are the height of her comfort zone. Then she plays on the bed, gets off and shakes toys, and zooms joyfully when they first go out in the morning.

 

 

Cloak is a sweet soul, but because of her emotional vulnerability, she needs a noble soul to adopt her and give her the forever home and love that should have been hers since puppy-hood.  Cloak might not be the most out-going  and cuddly pup. We who love dogs know that they always teach us and give us more than we ever expect. This will be true of Cloak, I’m sure. Cloak would do well with another dog in the household, as would potential adopters, so as to lessen the expectation on Cloak to be a typical dog. Probably a calm, comfortable dog companion would be best for Cloak. Col. Potter will help you problem-solve about  how to transport  her to your town, if you don’t live near Cloak’s foster home (Kansas City, Kansas). Since she is vulnerable emotionally, she will need an adopter who lives fairly close, or who is willing to drive a fairly long distance to bring her home. Please consider being that person.
