Adopt Calix A Charming Cairn

Please consider adopting Calix, a charming Cairn who was rescued by Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Rescue Network.  He’s a friendly, sweet, lovely, well-mannered little guy, who is approximately seven years old. His foster mom says that he’s such a well-adapted, well-mannered little dog  that its hard to remember that we don’t know his history. He was found wandering the streets, and was in a shelter, but was not claimed. He loves to play with squeaky toys, and the foster family says that they haven’t found a toy yet that he can’t destroy in a day or two. If you have a stuffed animal problem, he can take care of that in no time! Calix is a great leash-walker and has excellent car manners, and is a joy to travel with.  He’s doing great with basic obedience, but could benefit from ‘official’ classes. In Rock Springs, Wyoming, where he is being fostered, there are no classes! By the way, if you would like to adopt Calix, Col. Potter Cairn Rescue will help you problem-solve about how to get him to your town. You can see his profile on Col. Potter’s Available Cairns page page. Why not fill out an adoption application while there.

Foster mom’s absolute favorite thing about Calix is that he is a talker. In her words, “he groans, whines, and mumbles all the time. Most of his noises make him sound like a little Ewok, especially when he is playing or in his kennel.  He doesn’t bark much, except to come back in from outside, or to be let out of his kennel, but he definitely lets you know how he’s feeling.”

This little guy was supposed to have one or two toes amputated last week to remove a  supposedly fast-growing benign growth, but there was good news. There was no sign of re-growth in his foot, and no pain or inflammation. It was decided to leave it alone, and take a “wait and see” approach. When he first came to Col. Potter, he had surgery to remove this benign growth, and it was speculated that it might grow back. Calix does have a GoFundMe  page. He also has some allergies, and takes daily  allergy medications, and has weekly oatmeal baths.  He has been wearing a belly band, since his house-breaking is not yet at 100 percent.

Foster mom says that once he has recovered from his previous  foot surgery (probably mid-November) he will be ready for his forever home. He will have to travel from Rock Springs, Wyoming, to Salt Lake City, Utah or Denver, Colorado to fly elsewhere, but he should be able to go anywhere once she gets him to an airport.

Calix is eager to meet and greet everyone, and gets along well with other dogs. He likes to chase cats, but settles down quickly once he gets to know them. His foster mom reports that, like many Cairns, Calix  is obsessed with small animals. Since he has a hard time understanding that little  squeaky children are not prey, he would probably do better in a home with older children.

Calix is such a well-adapted, well-mannered little dog, reports his foster mom, that it’s hard to make sense of the fact that so little  is known about his story. He presents a very happy exterior, but can also be a bit stubborn, and in some situations, has some hesitance in trusting his people.  He will growl if he feels pushed around. His foster mom feels it is a reaction to feeling uncomfortable, or to feeling that something he values is being taken from him. She says that the longer he is with her, the less he tends to react that way.  She is working with him on this, and he has learned to “trade” treats for whatever he has. She adds that 99 percent of the time, he listens and cooperates beautifully. This boy is so full of personality that I recommend you fill out your adoption application immediately!

What a handsome boy. Did you know that even if you don’t live close by where the dog is being fostered arrangements can be made to get the dog to you.
